Cobra Simulation Standardises on Scalable for Immersive Dome Training

Cobra Simulation has standardised on Scalable Display Technologies for projection warping and blending in its immersive dome training solutions — citing Scalable's simulation-first design, multi-projector capability, and technical support as key differentiators over alternatives from the entertainment industry.

Cobra Simulation, a designer of immersive dome projection solutions for interactive training environments, has standardised on Scalable Display Technologies for projection mapping and edge blending across its product line. The decision reflects Cobra's need for a multi-projector calibration solution purpose-built for simulation — not adapted from the entertainment industry.

Founded in 2012, Cobra serves civil, military, medical, and education markets with immersive VR systems including the Cobra150 Venom, Cobra180 Venom, and Cobra320 Venom. These systems combine 8K display technology, patented folded lens systems, and motion-tracking technology to create full-body presence in virtual environments.

"We must provide a high-quality, high-fidelity and highly immersive experience. Many of our clients are utilizing our simulation technology for mission-critical training, ranging from military to medical," said Bradley at Cobra Simulation. "We have our own warping software, known as Cobra OmniWarp, that suits many of our clients, but it's designed for single-channel applications and doesn't integrate directly with others. We required a more in-depth solution that we could incorporate into more complex projects."

Scalable's ability to warp and blend multiple projectors onto non-planar surfaces — and to support dual viewports combining two separate render sources into a single projector output — met Cobra's technical requirements where single-channel solutions fell short.

"I've tested other warp and blend solutions, and Scalable is incredibly unique because its software was designed specifically for simulation and training," said Bradley. "Many of the other projection solutions on the market came from the entertainment industry and later evolved into simulation. There's a significant difference. We are deeply ingrained in the simulation and training industry. Therefore, it was vital for us to have a partner that understands the unique challenges of our application."

Ease of use was equally important. "Scalable makes a complex job very simple," Bradley added. "It doesn't require a deep technical background to calibrate with Scalable. Scalable allows us to eliminate the complexity of our products."

Cobra also highlighted Scalable's technical support as a decisive factor. "Scalable is a very agile business. Their technical and customer support team is invaluable. If they don't have an answer to a question, they will go to great lengths to provide a resolution. It's precisely the support you'd want from a partner."
