Holosphere, a UK-based immersive VR company delivering CAVE solutions for leading European brands including Jaguar Land Rover, standardized on Scalable Display Technologies for automatic multi-projector edge blending — cutting calibration time from a day and a half to under an hour and eliminating the need for specialized alignment expertise.
Holosphere is a Birmingham, UK-based immersive virtual reality company specializing in room-scale VR solutions for commercial applications. Founded in 2016 by Rob Halliday-Stein, the company develops CAVE environments — multi-wall, multi-projector immersive rooms that allow users to move freely within a defined area while surrounded by fully rendered virtual content — for clients including Jaguar Land Rover, Arc Vehicle, and GAME.
A CAVE (Cave Automatic Virtual Environment) is one of the most technically demanding configurations in professional AV. Multiple projectors illuminate the walls, floor, and ceiling of a room simultaneously, with content precisely aligned across every surface. Users inside the space experience complete immersion — they can walk, crouch, and interact within the virtual environment without the constraints of a headset. For applications like automotive design review, industrial training, or experiential brand environments, the CAVE format delivers a level of collaborative immersion that no other display technology currently matches.
The technical burden of a CAVE installation is significant. With projectors covering multiple surfaces at different angles and overlap configurations, achieving a seamless unified image across the entire room traditionally required extensive manual calibration — a process that Holosphere estimated at roughly a day and a half per installation.
"Holosphere provides virtual reality CAVE solutions for various environments, including gaming, museums, entertainment, colleges and corporations," said Tom Phillips, Studio Technician for Holosphere. "These companies are utilizing CAVEs as a training tool. We've recently recorded significant growth in the oil and gas industry. We were approached by a company in the oil and gas industry to create a room scale virtual reality solution to train new employees. We searched for a software solution that would allow us to streamline the projection edge blending in the CAVE."
The search led Holosphere to Scalable Display Technologies — and the results transformed the operational economics of their CAVE deployments.
"Two years ago, we found Scalable Display Technologies. Since then, we have utilized their technology exclusively for edge-blending in our CAVEs," said Phillips. "Scalable's technology is painless. It's simple to integrate alongside our content and technology. It's a very straightforward solution and performs how we want it to."
The impact on calibration time was immediate and substantial.
"Scalable has streamlined the calibration and set up for us," explained Phillips. "It would typically require a day and a half to calibrate our projectors, but, with Scalable's technology, we've reduced our time to an hour. Scalable has turned a complex challenge into a solution that does not require specialized training to install and calibrate. From my point of view, Scalable has been a lifesaver for us."
This reduction — from twelve or more hours to under one — has meaningful commercial implications for Holosphere. Faster installations reduce on-site labor costs, allow the company to take on more concurrent projects, and eliminate the dependency on highly specialized calibration expertise for each deployment. Scalable's automatic camera-based approach means any competent AV technician can complete a CAVE calibration without deep projection alignment knowledge.
The ongoing maintenance story is equally important. CAVE environments are typically installed for years, and projectors drift over time. Scalable's recalibration capability means Holosphere can bring a CAVE back to full alignment precision quickly, without the day-and-a-half manual process that would otherwise be required each time.
"My experience with Scalable has been very positive," Phillips added. "Their engineers and customer support quickly respond to troubleshoot any problems if they arise. The technology is very quick to integrate and straightforward for any integrator."
