Scalable Powers Eye-Limited Resolution Dome Display at I/ITSEC 2024

Scalable Display Manager is part of an industry collaboration presenting an eye-limited resolution dome display at I/ITSEC 2024 — combining seven Norxe 8K projectors at 240Hz with Aechelon image generation for fast jet simulation applications including F-16, F/A-18, and F-35 training.

Technology

Scalable Display Manager is part of a world-class industry collaboration bringing an eye-limited resolution (ELR) dome display to the I/ITSEC 2024 show floor in Orlando — suitable for F-16, F/A-18, F-35, and other fast jet simulation and training applications.

The collaboration brings together Immersive Display Solutions (IDSI) as systems integrator, Aechelon Technology providing geo-specific image generation, Norxe supplying simulation-grade projectors, and Scalable Display Manager handling multi-projector alignment and edge blending.

Display Specifications

The IDSI ELR display features seven Norxe P55 8K projectors blended using Scalable Display Manager and rendered using Aechelon's pC-Nova Nucleus™ image generators. The result is a 180° horizontal by 80° vertical field of view at eye-limited resolution — 2 arc-minutes per optical line pair as measured from the pilot's eye point — with a 240Hz refresh rate.

Eye-limited resolution represents the level of detail the typical human eye can perceive, beyond which increasing display resolution no longer produces a perceived improvement in visual fidelity. The addition of 240Hz refresh on both projectors and image generator delivers improved motion fidelity for the high-speed training scenarios fast jet simulation requires.

Partners

Aechelon Technology provided their Commercial Global Multispectral Database and pC-Nova Nucleus™ 8-GPU image generators running at 240Hz — featuring multi-GPU NVIDIA capability with simultaneous OTW, NVG, and correlated sensor simulation.

Norxe supplied seven P55 8K n-shift projectors featuring the NXL® hybrid light source with optional IR for NVG stimulation. The Unify™ electronics platform supports 8K at up to 240Hz. The P55 is rated for a first maintenance interval of 50,000 hours with a standard 5-year warranty extendable to 10 years.

IDSI served as systems integrator, providing display engineering to ensure resolution, brightness, and contrast meet the high-precision specifications of the US Air Force.

The ELR display was demonstrated at booth #1381 at I/ITSEC 2024 in Orlando, Florida, December 2–5, 2024.
