Scalable Display Technologies Celebrates 20 Years at InfoComm 2024

Scalable Display Technologies is celebrating 20 years at InfoComm 2024 — marking two decades of camera-based calibration innovation, from a foundational MIT patent in 1998 to more than 2,000 installations worldwide across simulation, entertainment, and enterprise markets.

Technology

Scalable Display Technologies will be exhibiting at InfoComm 2024 in Las Vegas — marking the company's 20th consecutive year at the show and two decades in business. The milestone is an opportunity to reflect on a journey that began not in a boardroom, but in a research lab at MIT.

Origins at MIT

The technology behind Scalable's software traces back to the work of Dr. Rajeev Surati and his thesis advisor Dr. Tom Knight, Jr. at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the late 1990s. Their research led to the development of a camera-based calibration system for projectors. MIT filed a patent for the technology in 1998, which was granted in 2002. Scalable was founded in 2004 — making it the original inventor and initial patent holder of camera-based automatic calibration for multi-projector displays.

Two Decades of Growth

Since 2004, Scalable has executed projects for organisations including Google, Microsoft, SpaceX, Lockheed Martin, and the U.S. Military, as well as Formula 1 and Formula E teams, Ivy League universities, and major cultural institutions. The company achieved its 100th installation in 2010 and reached its 2,000th installation in 2023.

Over the two decades, the product portfolio has expanded significantly. Color and intensity calibration was introduced in 2018. In 2021, Scalable Atlas launched — an automatic camera-based projection mapping solution for complex objects and surfaces. Most recently, Scalable Commander extended the platform into daily display operations, giving operators a simplified interface for hardware and software control across large multi-projector installations.

"Twenty years of innovation is an incredible milestone for Scalable Display Technologies," said James Pietsch, Director of Global Accounts. "From our inception at MIT to our current position as a leader in projection technology, we've collaborated with industry leaders and contributed to diverse projects worldwide. As we continuously push the boundaries of innovation, we're empowering our customers to explore new ideas and applications."

Scalable invites attendees to visit booth W664 at InfoComm 2024, held June 12–14 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
