Scalable Display Technologies Unveils Scalable Atlas: Automatic Camera-Based Projection Mapping

Scalable Display Technologies announces Scalable Atlas — a new automatic camera-based projection mapping software that eliminates manual calibration on complex 3D surfaces and objects. Built for theme parks, museums, events, and attractions, Atlas leverages Scalable's patented edge-blending technology to deliver high-quality, repeatable results with one-touch recalibration.

Scalable Display Technologies announces Scalable Atlas, a new automatic camera-based projection mapping software designed to seamlessly align multiple projectors onto complex objects and surfaces — eliminating the manual calibration that has historically made 3D projection mapping time-consuming and technically demanding.

Atlas is an evolution of Scalable's core calibration technology, extending the same patented camera-based warp, blend, and color calibration that powers Scalable Display Manager into a new class of application: arbitrary 3D surface mapping. Where traditional projection mapping onto irregular objects requires days of manual alignment, Atlas automates the entire process — delivering precise, repeatable results with a single camera calibration pass.

"Our traditional software applications are designed for edge-blending on professional AV screens with smooth curves. Scalable Atlas is an evolution of our edge-blending and projector calibration technology," said James Pietsch, Director of Global Accounts for Scalable Display Technologies. "Atlas is designed to simplify projection mapping on unique surfaces by creating an automatic solution to solve image alignment on high-end, intricate objects. We created Atlas to align with our customers' growing needs. It's important to us that we provide our customers with reliable and relevant technology."

Atlas brings several capabilities that set it apart from manual projection mapping workflows:

Automatic calibration on any surface — Atlas handles complex geometry including shadows, occlusions, steep and oblique projector angles, and variable projector positions across nearly any object. A unique algorithm compensates for conditions that would defeat manual grid-based alignment.

One-touch recalibration — Once installed, the display can be recalibrated at any time to restore pixel-perfect performance after projector drift or environmental changes. No specialist required on-site.

MPCDI and SDK integration — Atlas is integrated with the MPCDI standard and Scalable's SDK, enabling plug-and-play compatibility with leading media servers and playback systems. Content pipelines built for Scalable's other products work seamlessly with Atlas.

Target markets — Atlas is designed for theme parks, art installations, museums and visitor attractions, customer engagement centers, and events staging — any application where projecting onto non-planar, real-world objects is the creative or technical requirement.

Scalable has acquired 12 patents relating to edge blending, warping, and color-calibration technology. Atlas extends this intellectual property into projection mapping, bringing the same level of automation and precision that simulation and ProAV customers have relied on for two decades to the attractions and events markets.
